Poker playing Computers Not So Fast

Image
Most computer poker games attempting to imitate a human playing poker fail completely. There is but one exception, being Daniel Negreanu's Stacked but most of them come up short. The reason is that playing poker is about picking up on subtleties and variations, strategies and tells. And unfortunately, poker playing computers do not have the capability to recognize those things, at least, not yet. Computers faced a similar intelligence crisis when learning Chess a number of years ago. Now the difference is that our virtual opponents have to transition from a finite number of moves and possibilities in chess to an environment in which anything can affect the way a hand of poker plays out. Poker is more like real life, and as such, means computers are at a huge disadvantage in playing, be it hold'em, Omaha, limit or no-limit. A few poker programs, with names like "Poki" and "Poker Probot" are to be put to the test next week in Boston. The American Association f

The recent poker boom has not only filled the pockets of the world’s best poker players, but it has also launched a new and highly successful way for charities to fundraise. Most of the larger charity events that draw in the big names to play poker take place in Las Vegas or California. But this September the big poker fundraiser will be held in Minnesota. Former Minnesota Golden Gopher and NBA player Trent Tucker is bringing the Eighth Annual Trent Tucker Celebrity Golf and Poker Tournament to Canterbury Park racetrack in Shakopee, Minnesota on September 8 and 9. What is really eye-catching however, are the celebrities Tucker (who won an NBA Championship with the Chicago Bulls in 1993) was able to pull in. Already announced as players in the $2,500 buy-in tournament include former NBA stars Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Charles Oakley. The celebrities don’t just include basketball stars either, as Microsoft founder and current owner of the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trail Blaz

Poker Benefits Kauai’s Special Olympics

The first prize may not have compared to the Millions on offer this week at the World Series Of Poker, but a two-night stay at the Princeville Resort isn't too shabby when the cause is a little more important that money or gold. The tournament in question was a Texas Hold'Em Poker Fundraiser for the Kauai Special Olympics. It was held on August 6th and took place at the Wailua Marina Restaurant. 40 players gathered with the aim of sending as many Special Olympians to events and training across the country as possible. "These kids have no opportunity to compete in sports at school. There are four weekends a year where they get to be normal kids with no social pressure." Said Pat Coon, Special Olympics Coach. Their next fundraiser is an event in which two police officers are to stand on top of a building for two and a half days in order to raise $25,000. It's going to be called "Cop on Top."
