TOP 10 POKER QUOTES

Image
I’ve always been a big fan of the Poker Brat. He’s an entertainer and seems to liven up every comp he attends. This week in Paris was no exception. Moaning, whinging, cockiness, arrogance, you know, the usual Hellmuthisms. Anyhow, it got me thinking. I love Hellmuth spiels such as ‘If there weren't luck involved, I guess I'd win every one’ and ‘I can dodge bullets, baby’, but what are the best all-time poker quotes? Well, you guys probably have your own views, but here’s my top ten. See what you think. (1) Once you start thinking you have nothing left to learn, you have everything to learn -- Steve Badget (2) If, after the first twenty minutes, you don't know who the sucker at the table is, it's you -- Rounders (3) Forget about a chip and a chair, give me hand and I'll stand -- Warren Karp (4) There is more to poker than life -- Tom McEvoy (5) Even a blind squirrel catches the nuts sometimes -- nickylala (6) You can sheer a sheep many times, you can skin him only on

BALANCING WORK AND POKER

Image
When your done with this be sure to come read all of our poker articles at Recentpoker.com My life may currently be centred around poker, but, for a long time, I was working two jobs. At the office during the day, and in front of the lappie at night. For many months, I was the proverbial candle burner. At first, this was a real struggle. The late nights, fatigue, lethargy, etc, affected both my game and my work. I was irritable during the day and totally zapped at night. My job became more of an effort and my poker diminished in quality. To combat this, I decided to make a few changes: (i) Play less live poker If you play live and do well, you probably won’t be seeing beddie byes until 3-5am. Maybe even 6am if you have far to travel. Personally, I need at least an hour to wind down, otherwise I just can’t get to sleep. If you throw into the mix petrol, smoky clothes, fewer games, etc, then perhaps it would be best to frequent the online tables. There’s nothing wrong with playing live,

PartyGaming boss says US anti-gambling law could be scrapped

PartyGaming chief executive Mitch Garber has said he thinks there is a 50% chance of new prohibitionist US legislation which outlaws online gambling being scrapped within three years should the balance of power in Washington drift away from the Republicans. “That might seem like wishful thinking but we could see a strong backlash from US players ... and there could be changes [of control] in the house and senate,” he said. “In the meantime, we are going to keep our US database of [former] players - don’t forget, 10 million people have our software downloaded on their computers.” His position was echoed by Sportingbet chief executive Andy McIver, who also believes the US political climate could change in the industry’s favour. However, industry insiders suggested offshore operators such as PartyGaming, Sportingbet and 888 would be unlikely to regain their dominance in the US should anti-online gambling laws be fully unravelled. They would face heavy competition from the likes of Las Veg

Ontario to Ban Online Gambling Ads

Ontario will seek to ban advertising for gambling websites, citing their growing popularity among the province's youth. The sites are illegal under the federal Criminal Code, but Government Services Minister Gerry Phillips said Ottawa has not made the issue a high priority. On Thursday, Phillips will introduce a bill to ban the ads, arguing that online gambling is attracting a young demographic and is essentially unregulated. "There's no doubt that there's a substantial number of young people who are participating on these illegal gambling sites," he told CTV.ca on Wednesday. He also cited another problem: the impact on the province's horseracing industry. The Criminal Code makes an exception for online racetrack betting. "In the province of Ontario we've got a very large horseracing industry -- the breeders, the people who run the farms and the racetracks -- and it's very good business," said Phillips. "They say to us, 'We operate l

Illegal Gambling [Prohibition II]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prohibition II: Good Grief When government restricts Americans' choices, ostensibly for their own good, someone is going to profit from the paternalism. By George F. Will Oct. 23, 2006 issue - Perhaps Prohibition II is being launched because Prohibition I worked so well at getting rid of gin. Or maybe the point is to reassure social conservatives that Republicans remain resolved to purify Americans' behavior. Incorrigible cynics will say Prohibition II is being undertaken because someone stands to make money from interfering with other people making money. For whatever reason, last Friday the president signed into law Prohibition II. You almost have to admire the government's plucky refusal to heed history's warnings about the probable futility of this adventure. This time the government is prohibiting Internet gambling by making it illegal for banks or credit-card companies to process paym

PokerStars, the world's second-biggest Internet poker firm, said on Thursday that a looming U.S. ban on online gaming would not apply to poker, as it is a game of skill, and its business would continue as usual. Jet Set Poker closes its doors

Dear Valued JetSetPoker Customer: We deeply regret to convey that we shall be discontinuing service at JetSetPoker (the "Site") effective Midnight EST on Friday, October 13, 2006. Initially, and as per our previous statement, we were cautiously optimistic in maintaining operations for our membership after the passage of the "SAFE Port Act HR 4954" on September 30, 2006 by the U.S. Senate. We nonetheless initially believed it to be practicable. However, given the developments during the preceding week, including but not limited to, the unfavorable view of payment processors and financial institutions regarding online gambling and the extensive advice of our legal counsel, we have been instructed to cease activities and comply with this prohibitionist legislation. We were fortunate to have a first-rate membership and it was our pleasure to provide a destination site where members were able to enjoy their favorite card games and tournaments with the surety that we were

Shana Hiatt is suing the WPT

Reports emerging from Los Angeles on Sept 25th are saying that Shana Hiatt is suing the WPT for rumor mongering and economic interference. Hiatt, who was the hostess for seasons 1 to 3 of the World Poker Tour television program, has filed action, naming WPTE (World Poker Tour Enterprises) and its CEO, Steve Lipscomb personally as well as other officials from the company. The action from Hiatt seeks injunctive relief and damages for "intentional interference with economic advantage." Play Online Poker At Hollywood Poker Hollywood Poker Troubles for WPTE began earlier this year when NBC approached Hiatt with a possibility of working on the network, hosting for a poker production. The WPT heard about their talks and immediately contacted NBC, citing a non-compete clause in Hiatt's contract. Shana's action is in response to that clause, and if it is successful, would allow her to begin to work for NBC. However, Hiatt has succeeded in ensuring the WPT cannot restrict her f

Court Injunction Freezes Half of Jamie Gold's WSOP Purse

Image
The drama relating to Jamie Gold's winnings from the 2006 World Series of Poker continues. The parties involved woke up on the 6th September to news of an injunction blocking access to half of the bracelet winner's prize pool from the main event. Roger L. Hunt, a U.S. District Court Judge is expected to sign and confirm the injunction sometime soon. The court decision means that Jamie Gold will only have access to 6 of the 12 million dollars he won at the event. The other half will be held by the world-class Rio Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Gold's legal team has until the 15th September to appeal the injunction. It is not known what decision Gold will make with regard to the legal proceedings. The problems stem from an allegation by Bruce Crispin Leyser that Gold and he had an agreement involving merchandise advertising and profit sharing; a deal that would allow Leyser 50% of any of Gold's winnings. Leyser is now bringing documentation to back up his claim, holding and

2006 Borgata Poker Open $1,500 Event Concludes as Pros Battle Amateurs

Image
The 2006 Borgata Poker Open finished late on Sunday night when poker player, Jeremy Shor came from the back of the field to take the #1 spot and claim the Championship. He also managed to beat out Shannon Shorr, who is ranked the 2nd best poker player in the world, according to CardPlayer magazine. The final two on the table were Jeremy Shor and James English, who both come from South Florida. They went heads-up at 9.00pm and kept playing into the smaller hours of the morning. Both players showed their strategic metal, all the while maintaining an intensity that can only be seen in high stakes poker games. James English, who placed 2nd in the $2,500 Borgata Poker Open in 2005, had control of the match for most of the evening. However, disaster struck and his cards began to run cold. Shor took every opportunity from then on in to take the title, eventually pushing English out of the competition to take the Championship Rolex and $188,000 in first place prize money. Shor said" I got

Message From Fulltil Poker regarding U.S. Customers

As we are sure you are all aware, the U.S. Congress recently passed new legislation that may eventually have a significant impact on the online poker industry. While the intent of this new legislation is to eventually prevent the transfer of funds from U.S. banks to online gaming sites, we assure you that there will be no short-term impact on our business. In fact, unlike many of our competitors, we have no intention of abandoning our U.S. customers. We plan to continue our normal operations while the regulators, the banking industry and, very likely, the judicial system hammer out all of the details regarding this legislation. Playing the rookie

Image
I’m not referring to WSOP bracelet winner Brian ‘The Rookie’ Wilson, I mean those fellas who have hardly picked up a deck of cards and have yet to grasp the ins and outs of the game. Actually, I guess that is Brian after all. Picture the scene. You’ve been going down the casino for a while, frequented the online tables on many an occasion, and generally have a firm grip on how to play the wonderful game. A few mates hear of your new pastime and fancy giving it a crack. They’ve played a bit, but never on a regular basis. Play Online Poker So, you organise a small homegame in the hope that they will soon share your love of poker. Nothing too pricey, but enough so they give the game the respect it deserves. The scene is set. Your buddies trundle over, shades in hand in true rookie fashion, and take their seats at the felt. They know how to play, but are inexperienced. You clarify the rules, give them the low-down on their options, and make sure they know what’s going on. Right, it’s time

The Pitfalls Of Ace Rag

Image
At the bottom of a dark dingy pit is a collection of rookie poker players, each one having befallen the same long and fearsome drop. What do these beginners have in common? They have all misplayed the rather ugly hand… Ace-Rag. It’s a common error for first-timers, but after a while, and a few harsh lessons into the future, they gradually begin to learn a valuable lesson... ...Don’t overplay Ace-Rag!... Okay, an ace is the best single card in poker, but when it’s matched up with a raggedy two, three, four, etc, it can be one of the most dangerous hands in the game, unfortunately dangerous for you, rather than your opponent. For example, just say you call a preflop raise with A-6. What do you do when that ace flops and your opponent bets out? You’ve hit your best card but you have absolutely no idea where you stand. You could easily lose your entire stack, and many do. Similarly, if you bet preflop and someone reraises, what do you do now? If you call, what are you hoping to hit? The ac

HOUSE GAMES PLAYED SMARTLY

Image
Every poker player is a gambler. You'll often hear the phrase "poker isn't gambling" or "I don't gamble, I play poker". Nonetheless, the element of chance in poker means that you are playing a game that involves gambling. Even if you have an edge on your opponents (and hopefully, if you've been following my articles, you will), you won't always win. In many ways, playing winning poker requires you to conduct yourself like the House in a gambling game. Just as the House edge in a table game means the House will take a certain percentage of the action in the long run, your edge in poker means you will win a certain percentage of the hands you play. If you are a good player, you could have, say, a 3% edge on your opponents in a cash game. This means if you approach the game from a long-run perspective, that your time playing will net you the same kind of return that a casino will make by spreading a House game with a 3% edge. Ever seen a game of thr

Jennifer tilly wins her second major poker tournament

Image
Jennifer Tilly, girlfriend of Phil 'Unabomber' Laak has won her 2nd major poker tournament. She has said that the win and resulting confidence boost could make her unstoppable. The tournament in question was the World Poker Tour's (WPT) Ladies Night III. It was held at The Bicycle Casino, in Bell Gardens, California and took place on the 1st September. There was a first prize of $25,000 up for grabs. Tilly, who has been playing poker for a little over a year, said "I felt like I was suffering from the 'imposter syndrome.' I had these niggling self-doubts. But now I know I can really play… these women were extremely tough pros with blood lust at the poker table." The final table consisted of 6 players, being Jennifer Tilly, Lily Elviro, Marsha Waggoner, Cecilia Reyes, Isabelle Mercier and London Gallagher. The win means that Tilly is the first woman to hold the Ladies Night title as well as the World Series' Ladies World Poker Championship.
