2006 Borgata Poker Open $1,500 Event Concludes as Pros Battle Amateurs
The 2006 Borgata Poker Open finished late on Sunday night when poker player, Jeremy Shor came from the back of the field to take the #1 spot and claim the Championship. He also managed to beat out Shannon Shorr, who is ranked the 2nd best poker player in the world, according to CardPlayer magazine.
The final two on the table were Jeremy Shor and James English, who both come from South Florida. They went heads-up at 9.00pm and kept playing into the smaller hours of the morning. Both players showed their strategic metal, all the while maintaining an intensity that can only be seen in high stakes poker games.
James English, who placed 2nd in the $2,500 Borgata Poker Open in 2005, had control of the match for most of the evening. However, disaster struck and his cards began to run cold. Shor took every opportunity from then on in to take the title, eventually pushing English out of the competition to take the Championship Rolex and $188,000 in first place prize money.
Shor said" I got lucky. I knew I was playing against better players so I had to take more risks and get lucky; it worked."
English was in obvious shock after he watched his chip lead dwindle over the course of the last few hours in the competition, but admitted he was happy to take home $98,000 in prize money. He said "The Borgata is my favorite hotel and casino on the tour. The tournaments feature the best structure, the best staff, the best hotel rooms; it has everything I want as a poker player."
A notable celebrity was also on deck during the competition. Hollywood Poker's own, Kirk Acevedo took home $19,000 in winnings, and is a regular on both the small and the big screen. He starred in HBO's "Oz" and also made an appearance on "Law & Order." He can also be seen in the movie "Invincible," starring Mark Wahlberg. He managed an 8th place finish in the tournament.
