Poker playing Computers Not So Fast

Image
Most computer poker games attempting to imitate a human playing poker fail completely. There is but one exception, being Daniel Negreanu's Stacked but most of them come up short. The reason is that playing poker is about picking up on subtleties and variations, strategies and tells. And unfortunately, poker playing computers do not have the capability to recognize those things, at least, not yet. Computers faced a similar intelligence crisis when learning Chess a number of years ago. Now the difference is that our virtual opponents have to transition from a finite number of moves and possibilities in chess to an environment in which anything can affect the way a hand of poker plays out. Poker is more like real life, and as such, means computers are at a huge disadvantage in playing, be it hold'em, Omaha, limit or no-limit. A few poker programs, with names like "Poki" and "Poker Probot" are to be put to the test next week in Boston. The American Association f...

WILL MICHAEL JORDAN BE A SLAM DUNK AT POKER TOO?

The recent poker boom has not only filled the pockets of the world’s best poker players, but it has also launched a new and highly successful way for charities to fundraise. Most of the larger charity events that draw in the big names to play poker take place in Las Vegas or California. But this September the big poker fundraiser will be held in Minnesota. Former Minnesota Golden Gopher and NBA player Trent Tucker is bringing the Eighth Annual Trent Tucker Celebrity Golf and Poker Tournament to Canterbury Park racetrack in Shakopee, Minnesota on September 8 and 9. What is really eye-catching however, are the celebrities Tucker (who won an NBA Championship with the Chicago Bulls in 1993) was able to pull in. Already announced as players in the $2,500 buy-in tournament include former NBA stars Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Charles Oakley. The celebrities don’t just include basketball stars either, as Microsoft founder and current owner of the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trail Blaz...

Poker Benefits Kauai’s Special Olympics

Image
The first prize may not have compared to the Millions on offer this week at the World Series Of Poker, but a two-night stay at the Princeville Resort isn't too shabby when the cause is a little more important that money or gold. The tournament in question was a Texas Hold'Em Poker Fundraiser for the Kauai Special Olympics. It was held on August 6th and took place at the Wailua Marina Restaurant. 40 players gathered with the aim of sending as many Special Olympians to events and training across the country as possible. "These kids have no opportunity to compete in sports at school. There are four weekends a year where they get to be normal kids with no social pressure." Said Pat Coon, Special Olympics Coach. Their next fundraiser is an event in which two police officers are to stand on top of a building for two and a half days in order to raise $25,000. It's going to be called "Cop on Top."

Image
The game of poker is growing in popularity on the online poker front as well as the brick and mortar department. For evidence, all you need do is take a look at casinos like the Borgata Hotel and Casino, who just added a new 85-table poker room to their casino resort. The Borgata will debut a new television commercial to promote the new poker room next Monday. The 30-second commercial is directed by Oscar winner Barry Levinson and for the most part, be used to appeal to East Coast markets. Levinson sets his poker commercial in an office and centers it on a worker using poker jargon to describe his winning time at the Borgata Hotel and Casino poker room. The television spot debuts the casino’s new slogan of ‘Go with your instincts,’ Borgata has spent $3 million on advertising annually for the last few years. The casino and resort now plans on spending nearly $10 million by the end of the year. "Atlantic City didn't have a great reputation in the past," said Eric Stein, the...

Night and day difference in online poker

Playing poker online is a popular past time of people all over the globe. Anyone with a computer and internet connection can log on to one of the many internet poker sites and play their favorite games for a few minutes, or for a few hours. Different levels of play allow amateurs and professionals an opportunity for action. If you play poker online, you many have noticed a contrast in the way your opponents play at various times of the day. In the morning hours, the games tend to have a fast pace with little chat. Betting others off a pot is generally easier; therefore you won't see as many bad beats. Perhaps people are playing at work and not concentrating on the game. The evening hours have a tendency to be more manic. It's difficult to bet opponents out of pots, especially when they are holding hands that shouldn't have called the blinds. Bad beats seem to be the norm. Chat is chattier, but the pace of the game slows down. At night, chat is more pertinent to the game, bu...

Web Gamblers Have Little to Fear From Crackdown on BETONSPORTS

Image
In its recent high-profile criminal case against a major online gambling company, the U.S. government has taken its most aggressive step yet to crack down on Internet gambling. But prosecutors have left untouched some key players: the gamblers themselves. The Justice Department contends three federal laws make it illegal to operate an online gambling business, and U.S. officials have at times made statements suggesting it is also illegal for Americans to place bets on the Web. Yet federal prosecutors, as well as states that prohibit the activity, have largely left bettors alone. Last week, federal authorities charged David Carruthers, the chief executive of BetOnSports PLC , and 10 others with racketeering and fraud for taking sports bets from Americans. Prosecutors alleged BetOnSports , which is based in Costa Rica, took wagers "almost exclusively" from U.S. gamblers. The government won a court order to temporarily shut down BetOnSports.com and other sites, but didn't fi...

The manners of poker - table manners - Stop being an asshole on the table

Image
Premeditated Celebration Have you ever had a huge hand in poker, won the pot, and just wanted to jump out of your seat and run around the card room screaming like an idiot? Or have you wanted to berate another player at the table who challenged you only to find themselves on the short end of the stick? Has the urge ever struck to stare someone down for a two minute span while they ponder their next move? Chances are though; you've probably never even come close to doing anything like this... at least not in any normal poker setting. But why not try some of these things? After all, they're fun to do and we all see our favorite professional poker players on television doing them. And what could be more fun than taunting opponents or getting the attention of everyone in the casino through some premeditated celebration? The fact is though, while doing most of this stuff may sound like it'd be a thrill, our better judgment tells us not to do these things. And for good reason too...
