It’s the latest victory in Best Friends’ mission to bring an end to the cruel puppy mill trade. Thanks to our Puppy-Store-Free L.A. campaign, another pet store will be closing its doors.

The Beverly Center, an upscale shopping mall in Beverly Hills, California, has announced it will terminate Pet Love’s lease sometime in the next few months. Best Friends made the announcement at a news conference Tuesday.

“Our work here in Los Angeles sends the strongest possible message everywhere that pet shops are supplied by puppy millers,” said Paul Berry, Best Friends chief executive officer. “If a pet store can be closed down in the iconic Beverly Center, it can happen anywhere in the country – New York, Chicago, Boston and other large metro areas.”

Pet Love isn’t just your average little neighborhood pet shop. It has been a fixture at the high-end, celebrity-filled mall for more than 15 years. Pet Love is to pet stores what FAO Schwarz is to toy stores, says Julie Castle, director of Best Friends’ Community Programs and Services.

“It’s the mother of all pet stores in terms of strength and visibility,” Castle says. “It seemed a faraway prospect that this goliath would go down. We were surprised it happened so quickly and with such public backing.”

Castle says this latest development is one of the biggest accomplishments in the history of Best Friends outreach. “It’s one of the biggest days for Best Friends ever,” Castle says.

Since last July, Best Friends staffers and members have been at the Beverly Center educating potential customers about where those cute puppies in the Pet Love store really come from.

Mall shoppers saw documented proof from a Best Friends investigation that Pet Love acquires its puppies from puppy mills across the country. They learned that many of these puppies suffer from physical ailments caused by the horrible conditions in puppy mills and being taken from their mothers too soon. They saw a video of a KCBS Los Angeles undercover report that shows a Pet Love worker, who didn’t sanitize the syringe or his hands, pumping puppies full of antibiotics that hadn’t been prescribed.

“It helps people understand the connection between puppies they see in the pet stores and the cruel and inhumane conditions under which they are bred in these puppy mills,” says Elizabeth Oreck, Best Friends’ Los Angeles programs manager.

People listened – and hundreds of Beverly Center patrons and employees signed a petition expressing their concerns about Pet Love’s practice of selling sick dogs. Many of them shared their own heartbreaking stories of having bought a Pet Love dog – costing as much as $3,000 – and then losing them to illness.

Puppy mills flood the market with four million animals each year, contributing significantly to crowded shelters, where some five million animals a year are euthanized.

Oreck says people in the market for a purebred dog should look to their local shelter or breed rescue group. It’s estimated that one in four shelter dogs is a purebred. “You’re saving a life rather than supporting a cruel and inhumane industry that’s motivated by financial gain,” she says.

Best Friends didn’t set out to close Pet Love down, but rather to get the shop’s owners to change their business model and stop selling animals from puppy mills and other irresponsible breeders. The owners refused and even threatened litigation, Oreck says.

Now, the residents of Los Angeles County have spoken and the Beverly Center has heard them. “The mall is doing the right thing and they need to be commended for that,” Oreck says.

Pet Love is just one of several pet stores to close its doors since Best Friends launched its Puppy-Store-Free L.A. campaign last summer. We will continue to hold peaceful protests outside of stores that sell puppy mill dogs and to educate potential customers about where these dogs come from. We’ll also continue to work with government officials to change ordinances in Los Angeles County and put puppy mills out of business.

Another important part of the Los Angeles effort is Pup-My-Ride, which rescues small purebred dogs from the Los Angeles County shelter system and transports them to cities that don’t have enough of these dogs to meet public demand. Thanks to the program, hundreds of dogs have found their way out of shelters and into loving homes.

You might ask why ? And here's my story.

I have been trying to purchase a few Apple iphones for me and my employees for the past 5 weeks . Being that I live in Manhattan , I pass by Apples flagship store on 5th avenue everyday and for the past few weeks its the same story , sold out , none in stock , or we only have the 8 gig in , but I want the newer 16 gig ones .

So imagine my surprise when I walk in today ,store was packed as usual , I ask the first salesman I see if they got any iphones in yet , he says yes , then I ask if there the 16 gig models , and he says yes , but tells me to hurry as there going quick .

I go over to the line to pick them up and pay , and its long , so I wait about an hour and finally get to the front . The person working the front of the line tells me I'm next and to go to the Credit card line / I tell him , no I'm going to pay cash , and imagine my shock when I get the response , WE DONT ACCEPT CASH . I asked him WHAT and he repeats that they do not take cash for iphones .

Now I'm fucking fuming , it would take me an hour to go home and come back with a credit card as I did not have one on me , and by that time they would be sold out . I asked if he could put a few on the side for me , and another no . Realizing that it was not his fault , but apples , I didn't want to curse him out ,

But what The Fuck , Who on earth does not accept cash . I can go to Iraq and spend American dollars , but a store in the middle of New York , The most famous shopping strip in the world 5th Avenue , does not take Cash .

A man in central Ohio is accused of having sex with his picnic table.The investigation began when a tipster gave police three DVDs showing Arthur Price having sexual intercourse with a metal round table on his deck.

The incidents occurred between January and March 2008.Police say the DVDs show Price involved in a sex act in his bedroom. He walks out to his deck, tilts the table on its side and has sex with it.

Police say Price lives near an elementary school.Price admitted that he had sex with the picnic table when police questioned him.

An official report from People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), submitted nine months after a Virginia government agency's deadline, shows that the animal rights group put to death more than 97 percent of the dogs, cats, and other pets it took in for adoption in 2006.

During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 pets. The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) is calling on PETA to either end its hypocritical angel-of-death program, or stop its senseless condemnation of Americans who believe it's perfectly ethical to use animals for food, clothing, and critical medical research.

Not counting animals PETA held only temporarily in its spay-neuter program, the organization took in 3,061 "companion animals" in 2006, of which it killed 2,981. According to Virginia's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), the average euthanasia rate for humane societies in the state was just 34.7 percent in 2006.

PETA killed 97.4 percent of the animals it took in. The organization filed its 2006 report this month, nine months after the VDACS deadline of March 31, 2007."Pet lovers should be outraged," said CCF Director of Research David Martosko. "There are thousands of worthwhile animal shelters that deserve Americans' support.

PETA is not one of them."In courtroom testimony last year, a PETA manager acknowledged that her organization maintains a large walk-in freezer for storing dead animals, and that PETA contracts with a Virginia cremation service to dispose of the bodies.

In that trial, two PETA employees were convicted of dumping dead animals in a rural North Carolina trash dumpster.Today in Southampton County, Virginia, another PETA employee will face felony charges in a dog-napping case.

Andrea Florence Benoit Harris was arrested in late 2006 for allegedly abducting a hunting dog and attempting to transport it to PETA's Norfolk headquarters. "PETA raised over $30 million last year," Martosko added, "and it's using that money to kill the only flesh-and-blood animals its employees actually see.

The NSSF reports that Citicorp’s Merchant Services Division is refusing to process gun-related customer credit-card sales. This applies both to legal firearms transactions conducted through licensed FFLs as well as ordinary sales of firearms accessories. The first company to be affected by this decision appears to be firearms distributor CDNN Sports, a large retail operation based in Texas. Citi Merchant Services and First Data notified CDNN that its merchant services account would be terminated and funds seized. (Citicorp Merchant Services employs First Data Merchant Services Corporation to handle credit card transactions.)

Charlie Crawford, president of CDNN Sports Inc., explained: “We were contacted recently by First Data/Citi Merchant Services by a June Rivera-Mantilla stating that we were terminated and funds were being seized for selling firearms in a non-face-to-face transaction. Although perfectly legal, we were also informed that no transactions would be processed in the future, even for non-firearms.”

Five Reasons Not to Buy the iPhone

Considering the sheer hassle (namely, the long lines) involved in buying this thing, it might be time to look at some other reasons to hold off. Take a look at our list of extra reasons not to buy the iPhone – we hope they make you feel a little less like you're missing out on the most-hyped launch since....PlayStation 3? (you know, should you actually decide to go home and rest after a long week's work on Friday.)

1. You Must Have an iTunes Account. Not the hugest deal considering that most people use iTunes anyway, but it would be nice to have some other options for purchasing and managing your music.

2. No Direct-to-Phone Downloads. There's nothing like hearing a song you like (or thinking of a song you want) and downloading it right then and there, directly into your phone (or audio player). Sure, you can't do this with your iPod, either, but the feature is increasingly the norm on music-capable phones from Verizon and Sprint. Now, given that Apple has said that the iPhone will feature a full version of iTunes, it's perfectly possible that, come Friday, over-the-air downloads via Wi-Fi could well be a reality on the iPhone.

3. No built-in GPS. Like over-the-air downloads, built-in GPS is increasingly the norm on many lower cost phones from Sprint and Verizon. Sure, the iPhone has built-in Google Maps that give you directions from point A to point B, but good luck if you deviate from the route or get lost, since the lack of real-time GPS won't recalculate routes automatically based on your actual location (which you probably won't know anyway, since you'll be lost). To be fair, many of the other smart phones competing with the iPhone don't have GPS built-in either – case in point, the otherwise very satisfying BlackBerry Curve – but the feature is increasingly commonplace on many new phones from Verizon and Sprint.

4. Even 8-gigabytes (GB) of memory is not enough . If you watch a lot of TV, or are going on a long trip that involves even just one ten-hour-or-more flight, you'll quickly run out of video entertainment with just an iPhone. And since it has no expandable memory option, the iPhone can only hold a Nano's worth of media and that's it. Now, each movie takes up about 1-gigabyte of space or approximately 250 songs. This means that if you have, say, three movies and 1,000 or so songs, you've pretty much tapped out the larger iPhone's memory.

5. It won't play nice with your work e-mail. If you wanted to use the iPhone as your work phone, you'll most likely be out of luck, since the it won't play nice with Microsoft Exchange, which is one of the most widespread work e-mail systems. Yes, it'll connect with your Outlook and transfer emails that have already been retrieved on your desktop, but don't expect real-time push work e-mail a la BlackBerry.

So, it's okay. You can rest easy and go home on Friday, without an iPhone. Even if you still can't stop thinking about it, you can always get a line waiter on Craigslist for $250 or so (at last count).

Police Make Arrest in Kansas Teen's Death

Police arrested a man in the abduction and death of a teenager whose body was found Wednesday in a Missouri park four days after she disappeared from a Kansas store's parking lot.

Authorities said 18-year-old Kelsey Smith's body was found at a lake in Grandview, Mo., about 20 miles east of where she had disappeared Saturday. They did not say how Smith died.

Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass identified the suspect as Edwin R. Hall, 26, of Olathe. Hall was expected to be charged Thursday with premeditated first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping.

Douglass said Hall was interviewed Wednesday after police acted on a tip that matched him to a vehicle seen in surveillance video pulling into the Target parking lot about a minute after Smith parked there.

He declined to comment on the circumstances of Hall's questioning or evidence in the case.

Douglass said Hall appeared to be the same person shown in the video walking into the Target soon after Smith entered the store.

"I want to again express my condolences to the Smith family," he said. "I realize that this is not the preferred conclusion. While we cannot give them their daughter back, we can at least give them justice."

Johnson County, Kan., prosecutor Phill Kline said charges would be filed Thursday morning.

"This community has lost a vibrant and promising life and a family has sufferered unimaginable tragedy," he said.

Kline said his office would ask the state to set bond at $5 million. He declined to specify whether investigators had determined that Smith was killed in Kansas.

Douglass said police had received more than 500 tips in the case and had questioned numerous people Wednesday, including Hall.

Officers had been searching woods at the lake since Tuesday after investigators traced two signals from Smith's cell phone to an area about 15 miles east of the Target store in suburban Kansas City.

Before a church memorial service Wednesday evening, Smith's father thanked everyone involved in the search.

"She could walk into a room full of strangers and walk out with a room full of friends," Greg Smith said at Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village, Kan.

"Her excitement and passion for life was unmatched," he said, fighting tears. "She lived more in 18 years than many people do with a great deal more time."

Neither gunfire nor two days in a refrigerator could slay this duck.

When the wife of the hunter who shot it opened the refrigerator door, the duck lifted its head, giving her a scare.

The man's wife "was going to check on the refrigerator because it hadn't been working right and when she opened the door, it looked up at her," said Laina Whipple, a receptionist at Killearn Animal Hospital. "She freaked out and told the daughter to take it to the hospital right then and there."

The 1-pound female ring-neck ended up at Goose Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, where it has been treated since Tuesday for wounds to its wing and leg.

Sanctuary veterinarian David Hale said it has about a 75 percent chance of survival, but probably won't ever be well enough to be released back into the wild.

He said the duck, which has a low metabolism, could have survived in a big enough refrigerator, especially if the door was opened and closed several times. And he said he understands how the hunter thought the duck was dead.

"This duck is very passive," Hale said. "It's not like trying to pick up a Muscovy at Lake Ella, where you put your life in your hands."

In one instance, the DJ’s talk about the death of Matthew Carrington, a Chicago State University student who died after drinking too much water during a fraternity hazing – a type of initiation ceremony that college students play on each other.

Despite listeners calling in to warn the DJs that the stunt could be fatal before the death of Jennifer Strange took place, the DJ’s responded that: “"Yeah, we're aware of that.”.

Another DJ is reported to have said that “Yeah, they signed releases, so we're not responsible. We're OK.”

The family of Jennifer Strange is now wanting to sue the radio station so a similar tragedy can be avoided, as Strange’s three children are now without their mother.

A big city lawyer went duck hunting in rural Missouri. He shot and dropped a bird, but it fell into a farmer's field on the other side of a fence.

As the lawyer climbed over the fence, an elderly farmer drove up on his tractor and asked him what he was doing.

Two things made Christopher Willever's drunken burglary of a Tobacco Hut even worse as he crawled across the store floor — a lousy belt and his camera-loving backside.

Omaha's bare-bottom bandit was sentenced to three to five years in prison Friday for his March crime that earned him the fitting distinction.

"You were an ass in every true sense of the word in this crime," Douglas County District Judge Thomas Otepka told the 22-year-old Willever.

Tired of being poor, Willever drank a fifth of rum and decided to rob the store, said his public defender, Kelly Steenbock.

He was drunk enough not to realize that his pants had fallen down, exposing his bottom to cameras that eventually fed the surveillance to TV shows across the country.

"He was pretty humiliated and embarrassed," Steenbock said. "He showed his bottom to whoever turned on the TV."

Steenbock pleaded with the judge to sympathize with Willever's youth, no prior felony charges and participation in an alcohol treatment program.

Otepka said Willever was an adult who is still supported by his mother and does not have a high school diploma. He also said Willever denied encounters with out-of-state authorities until presented with the cases.

Willever was arrested again later in the year for receiving stolen property from another burglary while still facing charges in the bottom-baring case.

Willever could be eligible for parole after 18 months; he must also pay $1,100 in restitution to the store.

Naomi Campbell pleads guilty to assulting maid

Naomi Campbell pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault Tuesday for hitting her maid with a cell phone over a pair of missing jeans.

"I threw a cell phone in the apartment. The cell phone hit Ana," Campbell told Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Robert Mandelbaum. "This was an accident because I did not intend to hit her."

If convicted at trial, Campbell, who originally had been charged with second-degree felony assault, could have been sentenced to two to seven years in prison.

Campbell, 36, hit Ana Scolavino in the back of the head with the phone in the supermodel's Manhattan apartment last March. Scolavino was treated for a head injury.

In exchange for her guilty plea, Campbell must pay Scolavino's medical expenses of $363, do five days of community service and attend a two-day anger management program.

The British catwalker wore stiletto heels, a tight-fitting black dress and waist-length jacket and several gold chains around her neck for her court appearance.

Outside the courthouse, her lawyer, David Breitbart, said he didn't want Campbell exposed to stalkers, so "I'm hopeful she can do the community service indoors."

Some 100 members of the media covered the event, but Campbell left the courthouse in a black Cadillac Escalade without speaking to them.

Campbell's publicist, Howard Bragman, called The Associated Press to issue a statement that he said the model was unable to give because of the media horde.

"I pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in court today. That's the best way I know to say I'm sorry to Ana. I accepted responsibility and I'm prepared to take my punishment. But I'm not going to let this incident define me. The past is the past. My future holds great things and I'm getting on with my life," the statement said.

Campbell has a history of problems with her employees dating back to 2000. Several have filed lawsuits accusing her of assault.

Update on NEteller Founders arrest

Neteller founders Stephen Lawrence and John Lefebvre have been charged with money laundering charges by the US Attorney General in the Southern District of New York.

A statement from the office of Michael Garcia added that Lawrence and Lefebvre had been arrested in connection with the “creation and operation of an internet payment services company that facilitated the transfer of billions of dollars of illegal gambling proceeds from US citizens to the owners of various internet gambling companies located overseas.”

Lawrence was arrested yesterday in the US Virgin Islands and will be presented in federal court in St Thomas by tomorrow. Lefebvre was arrested in Malibu, California and will be presented in a Los Angeles court later today.

Lawrence and Lefebvre were arrested in the early hours of Monday morning, January 15.

Neteller suspended its share price this morning as the news broke.

In a statement released earlier today, Neteller said neither Lawrence or Lefebvre had any current position within the company. The statement added: “The group has not received any communication or correspondence from any US authority regarding this or any related matter.”

Lebebvre left Neteller in December 2005 while Lawrence left in October last year, just after the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act.

The news of the Neteller arrests spelt more bad news for those operators that have not exited the US.

Said one legal source: “It’s a warning shot across the bows for those still taking money from the US.”

He added: “They are aiming their strategy at the finance provision. It is consistent with the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). It is a more effective strategy than going after the operators themselves, such as PokerStars. When you get the money providers, you get the portfolio of operators.”

One leading operator suggested this was particularly bad news for those poker operators that remain in the US market. “This could be terminal for the poker business in the US. The average punter won’t be willing to jump through the hoops (to get their payments through).”

Skype Founders Unveil YouTube Killer

The founders of Skype, who have been busy preparing to launch the world's first broadcast-quality Internet TV service, moved one step closer to official debut by giving the nascent service a name: Joost.
The service, until now known only by the codename "The Venice Project," is designed to enable broadcasters to push their programming out to a worldwide audience over the Internet.

"People are looking for increased choice and flexibility in their TV experience, while the entertainment industry needs to retain control over their content," said Fredrik de Wahl, Joost's CEO, in a statement. "With Joost, we've married that consumer desire with the industry's interests."

De Wahl said Joost will replicate the complete television experience and ultimately fill a critical gap in online entertainment. "It will allow viewers to access all kinds of television over the Internet," he said.

Television Online

Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis sold Luxembourg-based Skype to eBay for $2.7 billion in 2005 and reportedly rolled part of those proceeds into seed money to work on the new service.

Joost's stated goal is to be the first global TV distribution platform, bringing together advertisers, content owners, and viewers into one interactive, community-driven environment.

As with Skype, Joost users will be able to download the software for free to watch the ad-supported television shows. In addition, Joost will let users rewind or fast forward within a show, much like DVRs can do with standard television.

And how will it all work? Joost will use the kind of file-sharing architecture that powers Skype. "Peer-to-peer technology is perfect for delivering broadcast in a very scalable way on the Internet," Friis said in a videotaped interview published on Joost's Web site.

Beta Service

According to the London-based company, Joost will be "piracy proof" and capable of streaming video at broadcast resolutions, unlike other online-video services such as YouTube.

For now, however, there isn't much to see, as the service is still in beta. But its founders are expecting to have a great deal of content available once Joost officially launches. There is no word yet on when that launch will take place.

"We've received positive and constructive feedback from our early beta-testers and are now at a stage where we're ready to reveal our true brand," said de Wahl. "The Joost name has global appeal, embodies fun and energy, and will come to define the 'best of TV and the best of the Internet

Cars that know when you are drunk

Toyota is developing a fail-safe system for cars that detects drunken drivers and automatically shuts the vehicle down if sensors pick up signs of excessive alcohol consumption, a news report said Wednesday.

Cars fitted with the detection system will not start if sweat sensors in the driving wheel detect high levels of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream, according to a report carried by the mass-circulation daily, Asahi Shimbun.

The system could also kick in if the sensors detect abnormal steering, or if a special camera shows that the driver's pupils are not in focus. The car is then slowed to a halt, the report said.

The world's No. 2 automaker hopes to fit cars with the system by the end of 2009, according to the report. Calls to Toyota's headquarters in Nagoya rang unanswered on Wednesday, a public holiday.

Nissan Motor, another Japanese car manufacturer, has already been experimenting with breathalyzer-like devices that could detect if a driver was drunken. Similar technologies, such as alcohol ignition interlocks, are in use in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Concerns over drunken driving have surged in Japan following a series of alcohol-related accidents last year. In August, a drunken driver collided with another vehicle carrying a family of five, plunging them off a bridge and killing three children.

The incident prompted stepped-up roadside spot checks by police, who also plan to stiffen penalties for drunken driving.

The Pokerstars.com Moneymaker Millionaire poker extravaganza culminated in the final table over the weekend, held at the Atlantis Resort and Casino in the Bahamas, where the Chris Moneymaker legend of an unknown player beating formidable opposition was extended by another unfamiliar player who became a major winner.

An incredible 830 000 players started out in the PokerStars.com freeroll, with months of play finally culminating in a diverse field of 27 players, who were flown to the Atlantis Resort and Casino in the Bahamas for the televised finale. The number 27 was significant, being the age at which poker celebrity Chris Moneymaker, then an unknown, took the World Series of Poker crown in 2003.

This weekend an international group of finalists competed for a $1 million prize that included a 2007 Aston Martin DB9. 15 Americans, 10 Canadians, a German and one Slovenian player made the final cut in a tournament that took five months and three rounds to generate 27 finalists.

Former ballet dancer Quillan Nagel, a 30-year-old grad student from Ottawa, Canada, took down the final $850 000 pot and the shiny $150 000 car in the end - a surprise winner in a field as diverse as it was competitive. After a tough 16 hours of play, in a tense final heads-up Nagel eliminated Jerry Watterson of Florida, calling with K-5 on what turned out to be a $700 000 Q-T bluff to win the main prize.

The diversity of the Moneymaker 27 is showcased by some of the other final table participants: a busboy who won $44 000, a fruit-packing assembly line worker who won $72 000 and Steve Bazzo, a Subway employee from Michigan who finished fourth and took home $118 000.

TAKING A BAD BEAT

Taking a beat is quite possibly the most difficult skill to master in poker. You may be a top class player with every move in the book, but if you can’t take a knock without going on tilt, then sooner or later, you’re going to go bust. Not even the greatest player in the World can avoid the occasional bad beat.

Now, when I use the term ‘beat’, I don’t just mean a bad beat or an outdraw, players can just as easily go off the rails from misplaying a hand or misclicking at a crucial point. If it’s costing you money, then somewhere, deep down perhaps, there’s a part of you that’s fierce with rage, and it is this fire that you need to learn to control.

A year or two back, I would have slipped into that dreaded pitfall that so many of us tend to succumb to. You’re tired, hot and bothered, sick of losing, then suddenly, you actually find a hand, a flopped straight perhaps. All the money goes in, but your donkey of an opponent somehow manages to fluke a runner runner flush. ARGH!!! Tilt Time!

But wait, before you start playing hands that earlier wouldn’t have been given a second glance, calling when you know you’re beat, and throwing away chips aimlessly in a desperate attempt to retrieve your losses, stand back for a moment and gather your thoughts.

Take a deep breath and ask yourself the following questions. Does it feel like the end of the world and, if you continue in this vain, are you likely to win your money back? If you find yourself answering either of those in the affirmative, then leave the room, immediately!

Barry Greenstein will splash water over his face, others will head out for some fresh air, many will simply sign off and take a break. Whatever your release, do whatever you need to do to avoid a nasty and ultimately unnecessary encounter with the Tilt Wolf.

It sounds easy, but it’s not. We often know we should stop, but something inside makes us play on. We want to win our money back, and quick, especially if we were unlucky to have lost it in the first place.

My advice would be to keep reassessing yourself and be honest. Too often we kid ourselves, thinking we’re fine, that we can continue playing a good game and remain focused. Poppycock! If you’re steaming, then admit it. If you’re playing badly, then tell yourself that you are.

If you can keep your feet on the ground and be consistently honest with yourself, then ending that unprofitable session before the tilt in you completely takes over becomes a hell of a lot easier.

Of course, if you’re numb to beats and you can continue playing with scant disregard for the financial losses previously encountered, then, by all means, play on, but those who possess this level of discipline are few and far between. Only a select few have the ability to adopt a robotic state of mind void of any unhealthy emotional response. In fact, they’ll be those 5% of winners that poker statisticians often speak of.

So, if you’re dealt a beat, be prepared to stand back momentarily, gather your composure, reassess the situation, and come to a realistic decision to whether continuing with the session is likely to result in a +ve session. Be honest, remain focused and take your beats like a man! We know most of your opponents won’t.

Cash Game blinds

In the world of tournament poker, the blinds are of the utmost importance. When it comes to the latter stages of comps, knowing how to adjust to the increasing blinds is a vital skill that if mastered could be the difference between hitting the bubble and taking home thousands.

In ring games, however, the blinds hold less significance due to (1) the increased stack sizes compared to the blinds and (2) The lack of any clock or blind levels. But incredibly, even with this information at hand, I still witness people treating the blinds as highly desirable commodities.

First and foremost, if you sit with the maximum amount (which is predominantly 100 times the big blind), the value of your blind is next to nothing. Therefore, defending it becomes an almost worthless practice. If someone’s that desperate to take your blind, then let them. Calling a pre-flop bet out of position with a weak holding will only cause you problems and create difficult decisions.

On the flipside, attacking the blinds is similarly pointless. Unless you can spot various traits in which, say, you know the blind is likely to call a pre-flop raise and then fold to a bet on the flop, constantly trying to steal them becomes a fruitless exercise that is likely to lose you money in the long run.

People seem to be convinced that because they have a couple of bucks in the pot already, then they are virtually committed to playing any two cards. In ring games, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Once your money is in the pot, it is no longer yours, and whilst in tournaments it may be worth trying to win them back due to their considerable size, in cash games you should be prepared to let them go more often than not. Their value is just too insignificant to worry about, and playing hands just because you already have some shrapnel in the pot is a bad habit that you really should avoid pursuing.

Sometimes, however, if you are on the big blind and you have the option to check, you will be obliged to see a flop and play the hand in some form or another. If it’s a multiway pot and you have a vulnerable holding, then play with caution. A big leak I witness is when people hit top pair with a weak kicker and refuse to let it go. Too often someone further along the table has you out-kicked, and if they don’t, then you’re probably not going to win a big pot anyhow. If, say, you hold Q-5 in a 5 handed pot and the Flop brings Q-7-6, then my advice would be to simply check. If someone bets than feel free to re-raise to find out where you stand, but make sure it is a big enough re-raise to push them off a draw. Otherwise, if they call, you won’t be sure if they have the draw or the top pair with a bigger kicker. What I certainly wouldn’t do is bet out. Although many may scoff at this suggestion, I simply feel that whilst you may pick up the pot there and then, too often you’ll either run into top pair with a bigger kicker or be called by another hand and subsequently presented with a tricky decision come the Turn, especially if you have top pair on a raggy flop. For me, cash games are about winning big pots, not small ones, and whilst you may pick up the odd pot by betting out, you run the risk of losing a big one if you are beat.

If, however, it were just you and the blind, then I’d use the advice that was once related to me by a certain ‘name’ player. If I remember correctly, he advised me to bet any pair or draw in a heads up confrontation and then bet out again if called. From my experience, this has reaped its rewards. With just two of you involved, the likelihood is that your opponent doesn’t have a monster, so take the initiative and bet any sort of hand. You can do it with absolutely nothing if you feel he will fold, but my preference is to have some sort of holding so that if he does call, I can still hit.

In cash game poker, blinds aren’t a crucial part of the game, but it is worth knowing how to play them effectively so you can pick up the odd pot whilst avoiding losing any major ones unnecessarily. Be sure that when you make the transition over from tournaments to cash that you understand the ineffectualness of the blinds and realise that most of those tournament plays that you made due to the existence of the blinds goes straight out of the window.

The key thing to note is that most of the time you will be out of position with a poor hand, so be sure not to invest too much into the pot from the blinds. It may seem like only a few dollars here and there, but it could cost you a lot of money in the long run.
